Andros – The “Green” Island of the Cyclades
Andros, the northernmost island of the Cyclades, stands out for its lush nature, flowing waters, stately villages, and strong maritime tradition. Unlike the typically arid image of most Aegean islands, Andros impresses with its mountains, springs, valleys, and distinctive architecture.

Geography and Landscape

Andros is located just two hours by ferry from Rafina and covers an area of about 380 sq. km, making it the second-largest island in the Cyclades after Naxos.
Its terrain is rugged, featuring mountains like Petalo (997 m), deep valleys, and numerous streams — which is why it’s often called one of the “greenest” islands in the Aegean.

The island’s natural environment is rich: waterfalls, olive groves, vineyards, and a variety of crops rarely found on other Cycladic islands.

History and Culture

Andros has been inhabited since antiquity. It was an important naval and commercial center, with shipping shaping its economy and culture well into the 20th century.

In Chora, the island’s capital, elegant neoclassical mansions dominate — a testament to the prosperity of Andrian shipowners. Here, you’ll also find major museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Goulandris Foundation) and the Archaeological Museum.

The island is dotted with monasteries and churches, many hidden in mountainous locations, blending spiritual and nature-based tourism.

Beaches and Natural Beauty

Andros boasts a coastline full of beaches for every taste:

  • Chrysi Ammos (Golden Sand): lively, with organized facilities.

  • Achla: one of the most famous, with wild natural beauty and a river flowing into the sea.

  • Zorkos, Vitali, Grias to Pidima: impressive and unique spots.

  • Smaller, quieter coves accessible by hiking or car.

A special mention goes to the Andros Routes network — restored and signposted trails that make the island a true paradise for hiking and nature lovers.

Villages and Settlements

  • Chora: the capital, known for its neoclassical architecture, museums, and charming squares.

  • Gavrio: the island’s main port, where most visitors arrive.

  • Batsi: a seaside village with vibrant tourism, nightlife, and a sandy beach.

  • Apoikia: known for the Sariza Springs, famous for their mineral water.

  • Mountain villages such as Mesaria and Lamira, surrounded by greenery and traditional Cycladic architecture.

Gastronomy

Andros is famous for its local products and distinct flavors:

  • Froutalia: a traditional omelette with potatoes, sausages, and local cured meats.

  • Andros almond sweets (Amygdalota): served at every celebration.

  • Local cheeses: such as petroti and kopanisti.

  • Snails and honey, which are integral parts of its cuisine.

Activities and Tourism

Andros offers a wide range of experiences:

  • Hiking on well-marked trails that combine mountain and sea views.

  • Culture: visits to museums, art galleries, and cultural events.

  • Sea activities: sailing, diving, fishing.

  • Festivals and local feasts, where music and traditional dance bring the island to life.

A Different Kind of Cycladic Island

Andros is unique because it combines authentic Cycladic charm with a lush, green landscape rarely found in the Aegean.
It’s a destination for those who love exploration, tradition, and relaxation by the sea — an island where elegance meets nature. 🌿
